Penganalisis Teknikal percaya bahawa setiap faktor pasaran yang berkaitan sudah dikira dalam harga instrumen. Oleh itu, satu-satunya perkara yang mereka perlu analisis ialah pergerakan harga.
Harga sentiasa dijangka membentuk dan mengikut trend, walaupun secara rawak. Adalah lebih berkemungkinan untuk harga meneruskan trend masa lalu daripada bergerak secara tidak menentu.
Penganalisis teknikal membuat ramalan berdasarkan pemerhatian bahawa sejarah cenderung bergerak dalam kitaran dan oleh itu akan berulang. Mereka mengaitkan pergerakan harga sejarah kepada psikologi pasaran berdasarkan ketakutan atau keterujaan. Dengan cuba mengenal pasti perkara ini emosi apabila menganalisis corak carta dan memahami arah aliran pergerakan, penganalisis bertujuan meramalkan pergerakan harga masa depan berdasarkan sentimen pasaran.
